Before we kick off, I am going to do a quick summary of the previous post as a foundation to this article. There are a few things you need to remember to start implementing the lessons that I am going to teach you in this article.
In order to become wealthy, you need to decide how you are going to become wealthy and what value you are going to add to the marketplace. Who are the person you are going to be and what is the process that you are going to follow to becoming that person that you need to portray?
I covered that you should choose at least ten people to study, and fully study to understand how they became rich. In studying, I don’t just mean reading their autobiography, but learn their processes and habits to understand how they became and remain successful to this day.
I also touched on three major areas that you need to work on to become the person to make money:
- Feed your mind with information. Learn about people’s habits and skills and the environment that they surrounded themselves in and what kept them there. Read the books, attend the seminars, watch the videos;
- Feed your body. Your body is the vessel to keep your mind running and if your body is exhausted, you won’t be able to use your mind. What you eat and what you put into it is vital, so you need to take care of it;
- Presentation. The way you present yourself is key on how people see and perceive you. People see the outside. You need to communicate yourself correctly to those around you by dressing accordingly and presenting yourself in the right manner. What you say is also representative of who you are. Look at who are surrounding yourself with and make sure that everything that you are putting out represents how you want people to see and perceive you.
With all of this this in mind, let’s jump straight into how to teach to become rich.
My Story
I was born in Uganda. I was 9 years old when I learn to make a profit, at 13 years old I was fixing cars working in the garage as a mechanic to make money. At 14 years, I started selling products with buy low, sell high model. At age 15, I decided to leave Uganda on my own, without my parent’s knowledge and start a life in the UK.
I flew, by myself to the UK and took up a job in a local factory, where I worked long, hard hours that were not only draining physically, but mentally too for a boy my age. This was not for me and I quickly realized that I would have to go to school to start learning again, and work on my English as I had not become quite accustomed to fully communicating in English.
Someone recommended that I go on a sales course, which I fully invested myself in as sales was what I was doing in Uganda after all. I was a born salesman. How difficult could it be? That’s when I set my first sales business at age of 16.
Not only did the sales course help me in working on my English and communication skills, but it installed, and reinstalled concepts that I thought I knew and understood to become a practical part of my practices. Ideas like “You become what you think about”, “You are the only person stopping yourself”, “Only you set the limitation of what you can be” suddenly became repeated over and over again, until they started resonating with me. It was around this time that I learnt the power of teaching. What you learn, you need to put into practice, and one of the easiest ways of doing this is to teach.
Translating My Story Into A Lesson
One of the most vital lessons to learn about this day and age is that the marketplace has changed. People buy from who they know and who they can trust. One way to gain people’s trust is by sharing with them knowledge and information and realize that what you know can actually change people’s lives.
I severely underestimated my story. I didn’t believe that my story would relate to anyone or capture anyone’s attention. In fact, I used to pay other speakers a lot of money to speak at my events and get frustrated hearing about them sharing stories that were not actually inspiring and not selling what they were supposed to sell. I had it in my mind that my story, of coming out of a guerrilla war in Uganda, would be more like airing dirty laundry than an inspirational talk to reach people.
The first time someone encouraged me to write a book, I thought that there was nothing to that. But it became almost self-fulfilling when I was asked to speak at an event. I had completed my speech and was called back onto stage and asked various questions about my journey. People were actually interested and were inspired by my story! People reached out and wanted to get to know me. Maybe there was something in writing a book after all!
What Sells You Is Your Story
I had learnt a really important lesson. People don’t care about what you are selling, they care about getting to know you first. And to do that, you need to tell your story. I followed some key lessons about how much value you have and how much you can offer other people, the marketplace and the world.
- You need to behave like a millionaire. You need to position yourself in a way that you are acting like a millionaire. Remember the ten people you are studying? What are their habits?
- Decide on your expertise and skill. Let everyone know what it is that you have to offer. Don’t choose various things either, you will start to undersell yourself. Choose one and stick to it!
- Package yourself. Packaging is vital when it comes to selling something, and selling your skillset is among that. If you have nothing to sell, you have nothing. They need to come to you because you need to add value!
- Promote yourself. Get your expertise out there and seen by people. You have value to add, so do so.
- Position yourself as an expert. Choose which kind of expert you want to be. There are three types of experts:
- RESULTS EXPERT. This is where there is practical experience involved. You know what you did and know how it is done. You have gone through the process and learnt. People get inspired by people and especially someone who has actually done it and achieved a result from it.
- REPORTER EXPERT. This is an expert that has got a vested interest in something or someone and studied enough about it to become an expert. They are inspired by it and want to convey the knowledge through teaching others.
- ROLE MODEL EXPERT. This expert does something to help people and lead people. Here it is about assistance and taking an interest in guiding others. If you want to help the poor, don’t join them! Rather, teach them.
Position and Package Yourself
Keep in mind what value you are adding to people and how you can sell that value. Forget about the view of “My book should make me a millionaire” or “My degree makes me worth x amount of money”. Learn your value and stick to it. If you are going to teach people, and convey your knowledge and skills to people, you need to keep in mind that people learn in several ways:
- Reading;
- Listening;
- Watching;
- Experiencing;
- Mastering the message.
It is important then, that you take that expertise and translate it into all of these formats to sell your value. People take seven hours of listening to you and hearing from you to actually buy from you. You then need to make sure that you are reaching out to all of those channels to reach, and ultimately sell to the person. So, start with the book, but keep the channels opening and flowing with the same message.
Here is a great pattern to follow:
- Book;
- Audiobook;
- Extracts of the book being published via PR channels;
- Workbook within seminars;
- DVDs of various seminars
- Free webinars internet videos;
- Paid webinars for one on one interaction and questions;
- One on one training and coaching programs,
- Conference speeches to spread the word;
- Membership training and educational materials;
- Certification programs;
- Retreats or weekends;
- Translating the material into different languages to spread internationally;
- Sign up people to sell your materials internationally
- Create apps for your material.
The lesson here is to develop a message and push it repeatedly through various channels until people eventually want to spend money on you to learn your message.
Get Rich By Creating Value
Tell the world what you do and what you know! But start by volunteer your information as much as possible. Volunteer as much as possible and talk as much as you can. You only learn to tale by talking so volunteer this information for free as much as possible to actually become established. When you volunteer, people want to buy your book, they want to get to know you and work with you. Learn how to get your message out there and keep doing it.
- Online technology is there for you to spread your message (which will be the next post);
- Create partners all around the world to spread your message.
When you develop your story, you learn to sell yourself. This will in turn, add value to the world around you. You have to become a millionaire before you start actually see the money.
