In this post, I am going to take a look at the three main reasons why, if you consider yourself an Expert, you are not making money. If you are an expert at something, and especially something that you have chosen, you should be making money. Now, the thing is, if you are not generating an income, it is very difficult for you to believe that you can make a difference. But I am here to tell you, that the more you teach, the more difference you can make and the wealthier you are.

Who is an Expert

Let me start out by examining what an expert is. An expert is a person who makes a choice and decision to learn about something. It is someone who will spend hours and years learning about something so that they can say that they are the best at it. But experts are also still students who keep on learning.

An expert can never learn enough. And by continuously learning, they will be able to sustain that to make an income.

First Reason: YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT

The first reason why you are not making money as an Expert is if you are NOT an Expert! If you are not doing what it takes to become an expert and putting the work in to being the best, you aren’t one. Being an expert means that you need to make a commitment to learning how to be the best at it. It takes consistent commitment time of learning and practicing.

If you are not putting an hour in a day or spending at least a year trying to learn something, you are not putting the commitment in. If you are not putting the commitment in, you will feel inadequate and that will translate into you not succeeding.

You need to learn from the best. You need to pick one topic and spend regular time trying to learn from other experts in the industry how to do it. By this, you need to immerse yourself by learning and reading and listening to whatever you can and whatever they have to teach you. Choose to go to seminars or workshops or networking and gain knowledge face to face. If you start applying it to daily life and in the way you communicate, you will become an expert.

Second Reason: YOU DON’T HAVE A PRODUCT TO SELL

This may seem obvious, but there are a lot of people who think that they can make money, but don’t have an actual product to sell. In fact, you need to have a suite of products and programs to sell.

 You need something structured and solid for the world to see what value you are adding to other people’s lives. For me, affiliates and marketing other people’s products don’t count as much. You don’t have your name on it. You are rather marketing someone else’s product, that they are selling for a one-off commission. You cannot generate a long-term relationship and sense of trust with someone if you don’t have your name on the product.
You need to remember that you need a suite of products, so have the product and then make sure you are covering all of the ways people learn. So, you are selling your book for example. You need to keep in mind that people learn in five different ways. So, your coaching program needs to cover these five ways:
  • Reading;
  • Listening;
  • Watching;
  • Experiencing;
  • Mastering.

So, let’s break that down into your suite of programs. Your message can therefore be sold as a Book, Audiobook, Special Report, Workbook, Seminars, Webinars, Audio Training Programs, Video Training Programs, Membership Programs, Home Study Programs, Coaching, Mentoring Program and Mastermind Programs.

You need to keep in mind that you aren’t going to make much money off the book. Books are between $10 to $20. Even if you sell a batch of books, that’s not going to be enough. The point is that you can take the book and upsell it to the next experience for your customer until they are paying $15,000 for a coaching session with you.

But, before you sell something, you have to gain trust. So, you need to give away free products until you have gained someone’s trust for them to buy.

Third Reason: YOU ARE NOT PROMOTING YOURSELF EVERYDAY WITH CAMPAIGNS
You need to be out there consistently, selling yourself. If you are only sitting back and enjoying the Facebook likes, you aren’t doing enough. The lack of campaigns and selling themselves is what is killing experts.
Go and volunteer and share what you do and have fun doing it!

Start by teaching other for free. If you are teaching and volunteering, and spreading your message, you are creating trust with people. Just remember TEACHING IS MARKETING.

 For those who can pay, give them the experience that they are looking for. Keep in mind that you can upsell people while you are volunteering and teaching people for free. If I am giving a speech somewhere, I have people coming up to me asking to buy the book without me even saying that the book is for sale.
From there, they can watch the online videos, or book some time to spend face to face time with me.

GIVE AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE!
